Emma Jane Hellsbane knows something evil is worming its way through her college campus—she can feel it. Literally. Her freakish ability to feel other people’s emotions as though they were her own has always been monumentally awkward, and it’s easier for her to just pretend it doesn’t exist. But this time her paranormal ability just might help her save lives.

Emma Jane’s fairly certain that whatever the hateful, egomaniacal, Godlike thing is, it’s set up shop inside her boyfriend, the frat boy/soccer star Justin. And if she doesn’t figure a way to get it out of him soon, Justin’s soul will be the appetizer to the main course—the whole student body. Problem is, the big baddy is granting sinister wishes, and with each one the risks grow higher and the phrase Be careful what you wish for becomes a real-life dire warning. Of course for Emma, what feels like it could be the end is in fact just the beginning…

A fun introduction to the world of Emma Jane Hellsbane!

Sensing other’s emotions is an ability that college student Emma Jane Hellsbane wish she didn’t have. When she suspects her hot, soccer player boyfriend Justin is being possessed by a vengeful entity, Emma turns to the only person that knows of her secret, her teenage friend Mihir. Together, they devise a plan to save Justin and the student body from the soul stealing villain that will change the course of Emma’s life as she knows it.

“Mihir didn’t really want to be a doctor. He wanted to be Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Like I said…he’s fifteen.”

When we meet Emma in Commencement, she’s a college student who’s about to graduate. She’s a strong young woman with a pure heart that is trying to understand her gift while living a “normal” life. I love her curiosity of the supernatural (as if her abilities aren’t proof enough!) and determination to triumph over evil, even when faced with betrayal. Her BFF Mihir is quirky and a fun, teen-wiz who leaves his mark with his charming personality. Emma steps into the heroine role flawlessly and gives us a glimpse of the future butt kicking woman she’ll become. We get to see her character not only grow, but find a purpose by the story’s end.

My heart stopped, my mind screaming at me to run. But I couldn’t. Justin was in there…somewhere. I couldn’t abandon him.

This prequel to the Hellsbane series gives you enough back story and character development without overwhelming. The story flows with a solid plot, a little mystery and humor. The dangerous world of the supernatural Ms. Cuccaro has created and Emma Jane Hellsbane’s sassy personality are the perfect pairing!
