“Reasons to Read Superhero Romance” by Lola Dodge
1. Mix up your typical PNR and UF reads. I love me a good vampire/werewolf/shifter/magic story, but we all need a little variety in our lives. Superhero romances have the elements you love (sexy Alpha males and kickass heroines) but the super powers create a totally different vibe than your typical mythology- and folklore-based stories.
2. Fun with gender roles. Super powers totally even the gender playing field. The beefy dude with super strength doesn’t have an advantage when the heroines are flying around shooting laser beams. Superheroines don’t just hold their own in a fight—they dominate, whether the opponent is a man, woman, or force of nature.
3. Unapologetic spandex. Mind you, the skin-tight clothes are inappropriate in 99% of life and crime-fighting, but I’m willing to wait for the 1% of the time the hero is like meh—I’ll just walk around in this fitted body suit that shows off my six-pack.
4. Super-powered sexytimes. Because every girl should get in bed with a mind reader at least once!
Intrigued? Want to know where to get started on this addictive genre? Here are a few of my favorites:
Superpowered Love Series by Katey Hawthorne (for the m/m lovers out there)
Midnight Justice (a steamy hero anthology from some of Samhain’s heavy hitters)
Bigtime Series by Jennifer Estep (one of the first superhero series in the genre)
And of course, my baby, the Manhattan Ten Series. Belle Fury is out today, and you definitely want to see what happens when this snack-cake-loving ballerina develops superpowers on opening night:
Belle Fury by Lola Dodge
Manhattan Ten #3
This is one diva with killer moves…
Belle Fabian has worked her toes to the bone to become an internationally renowned ballerina. When the curtains rise on her career-making performance of Giselle, she brings down the house—literally.
Mid-dance, she manifests a superpower that nearly destroys the Metropolitan Opera House, wiping out a line of chorus girls and sending the audience dashing for the exits. As she flees the theater, she assumes the worst. Her hard-won career is over.
The Manhattan Ten’s leader is playing hooky with his new lady, so it falls to Red Ruin to round up the super-powered danseur. It’s just one small, bird-boned woman hiding in a convenience store. How hard could it be?
Their first encounter generates sparks that border nuclear and their chemistry sends Belle’s powers into overdrive, but their perfect storm of passion is marred by her suspicion that Ruin is holding back. That secret that could turn the sweet burn of Ruin’s lightning into a permanent scar on her heart.

You know, I don’t know why I haven’t gotten into this genre yet. It has me written all over it. I need to go check out all the series you mentioned, starting with manhattan 10.
Thanks for having me, Lori 🙂
